WHAT ARE SECONDS?

"seconds" are pieces that have minor imperfections or defects
slightly flawed compared to the standard quality of the item
imperfections can include small cracks, glaze irregularities, chips, warping, or other minor flaws
seconds are typically offered at a reduced price to accommodate these imperfections
nevertheless, despite flaws, seconds remain functional and can fulfill their intended purpose
people appreciate seconds for their unique character and value, seeing imperfections as part of their handmade charm
these imperfections are typically cosmetic in nature and do not affect the structural integrity and the functionality or durability of the ceramic piece

COMMON ISSUES:

CRAZING: Fine cracks that appear on the surface of a ceramic glaze.

It occurs when there is a difference in the rate of contraction between the glaze and the clay body during the firing. While crazing does not typically affect the structural integrity of the ceramic, it can compromise its aesthetic appeal.

GLAZE IRREGULARITIES: Uneven or inconsistent glaze application resulting in variations in color or texture.

WARPING: Distortion or bending of the ceramic shape during firing, resulting in an irregular form

BLISTERING: Bubbles and pinholes in the surface of the glaze caused by trapped air or gases during firing.

KILN SPOTES: Spots or blemishes caused by contact with other ceramics during firing in the kiln.

CHIPS: Small pieces of the ceramic material that have chipped off, usually along the edges.
